Cervical Cancer Vaccine Creator Coming to Indonesia

Professor Ian Frazer, the creator of the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer will visit Indonesia from 25 to 28 April 2011. Frazer will play a documentary Catching Cancer (Cancer Affected) at universities in Jakarta and Surabaya as well as meet with scientists and researchers Indonesia.

"I am proud to welcome the visit of Professor Frazer to Indonesia.Karyanya demonstrated scientific excellence that we have in Australia and I hope his arrival inspire the researchers and medical scientists Indonesia as well as strengthen cooperation in research and relation between citizens with Australia," said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia , Greg Moriarty, on Monday (4/25/2010) in Jakarta.

Documentary film screenings will be held on April 26 at the University of Indonesia, Jakarta and Wednesday, April 27 at the University of Airlangga, Surabaya. Government officials, members of the medical profession, students and researchers will have the opportunity to attend these screenings and take part in a discussion with Professor Frazer.

Professor Ian Frazer is Director of the Diamantina Institute. He is the creator of the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV), the first vaccine designed to stop the cancer. He is the winner of Australian of the Year in 2006 for his work in the development of HPV cervical cancer vaccine.

Professor Frazer also teaches immunology to undergraduate and post-graduate University of Queensland. Recently he was rewarded as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
